When you got your braces on, our Marietta orthodontist explained the proper care of your new smile and all the ways to clean around the appliances in your mouth.
You probably know that gum disease is one of the greatest threats to braces wearers and that you should be brushing after eating anything. You might even have a toothbrush and toothpaste in your handbag, backpack, or tote. But cleaning up after eating is only one way to keep your mouth clean with braces on.
Have you thought about which foods might be extra harmful to your teeth while you’re wearing braces?
When deciding which items to pack in your lunch, cook for dinner, or make for breakfast, you really have two questions to ask,
- How will this food affect my braces, and
- How will this food affect my teeth?
It’s important to think over both so that your investment is protected as much as your oral health!
Foods that can break your braces or wires include things like ice, hard candy, raw veggies, and sticky foods like toffee or caramel. Avoiding items like these will help keep you from making appointments to fix brackets or re-set wires that have popped off.
Keep your teeth healthy by avoiding foods that have to be flossed out like popcorn, apples with peels, and berries with seeds. Save those for dinner, when you’re at home and have access to your extra cleaning aids.
If you keep your teeth clean and your braces intact, it will be just a matter of months before your smile will be straight and healthy!
